Vandalism and riots during MediaMarkt discount promotion

MediaMarkt is celebrating its birthday, but fun is different. Instead of a circle with cheese and liver sausage, it became an evening of destruction and riots at the MediaMarkt store in Rotterdam. The police even had to be involved to clear the square in front of the store.

To commemorate its 25th anniversary, MediaMarkt had come up with a promotion to open for an hour on the night from Saturday to Sunday. During that hour, customers could expect deep discounts on all kinds of tech gadgets. Hundreds of people were interested and gathered on the square in front of the store. Some people had been queuing for hours when about fifteen minutes before the store was due to open, a grim situation arose with people trying to enter the store. A glass door was destroyed and eventually there were even fights and fireworks.

The 25th hour at MediaMarkt

The atmosphere changed dramatically in a short time and the police decided to clear the square. MediaMarkt ultimately did not go through with the promotion. According to the police spokesperson, the company did not make contact to inform the police of the upcoming action. The police spokesperson says otherwise NOS that the organization would have been happy to provide tips and advice. The fact that the store is located near an entertainment area is already a risk, especially on Saturday evenings.

Two people were ultimately arrested, including for threatening a police dog handler and not listening to a police order. More arrests may follow, because the Rotterdam police are still examining the images of the Binnenwegplein. The ’25th hour at MediaMarkt’ promotion may therefore continue for some people.
