Craft beautiful plant signs from patinated spoons for yourself or as a gift. Handy spoon signs last well in use.
Plant signs are very necessary for a green thumb. Plant signs made of spoons are a joy to the eye.
You can use old spoons that are no longer used in the kitchen for plant signs. You can also find old spoons at flea markets at an affordable price.
Make sure you don’t sacrifice spoons made of silver for a craft project. Rather, use cheaper spoons made of alpaca or new silver.
Alpakka is a metal alloy made of copper and nickel. Alpaca looks like silver, but it can be recognized by the stamp ALP (alpaca), UH (new silver) or NS (nysilver).

Make a plant sign from a spoon – a wonderful gift idea!
You need a sturdy hammer to make a plant sign. With a light and small hammer, it can be difficult to get the spoon flat. The bigger and heavier the hammer, the faster you can flatten the spoon.
The plant sign should be hammered on an anvil. You can also use some other strong steel that won’t give way as a base. The sign should not be hammered on a wooden surface, as it easily leaves marks on the wood.
Remember to always wear hearing protection when hammering. Hammering makes a really hard bang.
Supplies:
- Earmuffs
- an old spoon, for example alpaca
- an anvil or other inflexible steel base
- stout hammer
- letterpress set
- black permanent marker
Do like this:
- Put hearing protection on your ears.
- Put the spoon on the anvil.
- Hammer the spoon flat with a stout hammer. Turn the spoon over a couple of times to get an even result.
- Choose the letters you need for the name of the plant from the letter stamp set. Model the letters on the spoon so that you can hammer the name of the plant in the center as much as possible.
- Place the letter punch on the spoon in the right place and hit it hard with the hammer 2-4 times. Make sure the spoon stays in place between strokes so that the letter is precisely bordered. Hammer the following letters in a row in the same way.
- When you have hammered out the entire text, color the letters with a black permanent marker. Wipe off the color that goes over the letters with your finger. The plant sign is ready for use!
