Venice, Homo Faber: the light installation by thebackstudio

Venice,

The third edition of has just ended Homo Faber 2024, the Venetian event dedicated to the art of artisan excellence created by the Giorgio Cini Foundation in partnership with the Cologni Foundation of Art Crafts and the Michelangelo Foundation. The Journey of life, this is the title of the exhibition, it was a real journey along the entire path of human life – from childhood to love stories up to dreams and the afterlife – capable of offering an unprecedented and incredible glimpse of artisan mastery. Unique and original objects have become, within the exhibition itinerary, the common thread of a story poised between reality and dream.

An installation that left spectators wide-eyed, created by the happy union between the artistic director Luca Guadagnino and the architect Nicolò Rosmini: together they gave life to an exhibition full of a surprising variety of skills, techniques and innovative approaches coming from master craftsmen from all over the world. For the 2024 edition Panerai, the Tuscan maison renowned for its innovative approach to watchmaking, has promoted the creation of a light installation in the Sala degli Arazzi – Love Unionthe one dedicated to union and love – created by the artistic duo thebackstudioformed by Yaadz Contactor and Eugenio Rossi, known for his contemporary conception of light art and design and selected by the Milanese gallery MATTA.

A spectacular modular installation composed of 103 lamps that echoed the intricate mechanics of Panerai’s watchmaking heritage, underlining the Maison’s illustrious history in inventing reliable luminescence tools. The creative partnership benefited from the duo’s experience in neon lighting and contemporary art, while the structure was reminiscent of the architecture of watchmaking mechanics.

«The lamp Assembly n. 0/103 was born from an in-depth study of industrial materials and prefabricated objects, both high-end and accessible. It was important to make them communicate despite their different origins by extrapolating them from what they were created for and giving them a new meaning. We used recycled glass found in public areas, instead of using Murano glass tout court, but in this case some colored tubes, in particular the blue and green ones, were made with Murano glass to pay homage to this wonderful location” , explained Eugenio Rossi of thebackstudio.

Inspired by luminescence as a distinctive element of Panerai’s watchmaking tradition, Assembly n. 0/103 it is a luminous environment that recalls the modular architecture of watchmaking mechanics and celebrates the infinite pulsation of Italian creativity: «We are honored to have participated once again in this culturally rich event. THE’Homo Faber this year reflected our reflections on time, while the installation developed by the talented artistic duo tells of our dedication to the art of watchmaking and our continuous search for innovation, where luminescence manifests itself in the spirit of Italian creativity handmade,” explained Panerai CEO Jean-Marc Pontroy.
