Speaking at today’s media day ahead of the Azeri GP, Max Verstappen did not rule out reuniting with Adrian Newey at Aston Martin in the future.
More specifically, when the Dutchman was asked about one day driving a Newey-designed car again and that Aston Martin boss Mike Krack had said the door would be open for him, the Red Bull driver replied:
I have other concerns right now that I’m paying close attention to and working on. That’s something I’m thinking maybe for the future, not now. Adrian and I have a very good understanding. I also texted him after the presentation was announced, even though of course I knew it was coming. So, I’m happy for him.
It’s a new challenge, of course, I’ve always said I’d love to stay. But after a point you can’t reverse these things. So, then you’re just excited for people who are looking for new challenges. I also know that Lawrence (Stroll), of course, is pushing hard to make Aston Martin successful, so it’s quite understandable, of course, that he wants to have Adrian on his side.
The lure of working with a team led by Newey has proved enough to attract some of the best drivers in Formula 1 over the past three decades. Verstappen believes this could still be the case from 2026, when Newey’s first indicative influence will be tested under the new regulations, with the three-time world champion adding:
Yeah, I don’t know. I mean, I’ve worked with him so I know what he’s like as a person and what he can do. I think everyone would love to work with Adrian, I guess in their career. Possibly, yes.
