Max Verstappen is nothing short of superb. On Sunday morning Danish time, the Dutchman accomplished his mission when the Red Bull driver finished ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris in the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Las Vegas.
With fifth place, Verstappen finished a single place ahead of Norris, who as the closest pursuer can now no longer catch up with the Dutchman in the World Championship standings. Verstappen is thus world champion for the fourth year in a row, even though there are two grand prix and one sprint race remaining in the season.
The Grand Prix ended in a great Mercedes triumph as George Russell, who started in pole position, maintained his leadership position and won. Teammate Lewis Hamilton picked up eight places along the way and finished second. Carlos Sainz of Ferrari completed the podium.
Kevin Magnussen did not have the speed in his Haas racing car and finished 12th, which was also the Dane’s starting position. It didn’t bear fruit that Magnussen was the only one who only pitted once.
On the other hand, Magnussen’s teammate, Nico Hülkenberg, delivered a good race in the American state of Nevada. The German thus finishes in eighth place, ahead of drivers such as Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin.
Red Bull has not had the best car in the Formula 1 field for large parts of the season, but Verstappen has taken his chances and got the most out of several races. With the title in his sights towards the end of the grand prix, Verstappen could see Sainz and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc pass, but the calm Dutchman knew fifth place was enough to secure the title ahead of next weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix.
The Dutchman leads the overall WC standings with 403 points. Lando Norris has 340 and there are only 60 points left to race.
Verstappen is the sixth in a row after Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Juan Manuel Fangio, Sebastian Vettel and Alain Prost to win four world championships.
