VfB Stuttgart finds a new sports director

VfB Stuttgart has apparently found a successor for ex-sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth, who was promoted to sports director.

Former professional Christian Gentner is set to take over the position, several media outlets are unanimously reporting. According to “Bild”, the 39-year-old will receive a contract until 2027. VfB apparently wants to officially announce the decision later this week.

Gentner, who became German champion with the Swabians in 2007, previously served as head of the licensed player department in Stuttgart. Now he is moving up a level in the hierarchy.

The position of sports director had been vacant since July 1st. At that time, Wohlgemuth was rewarded with promotion for his outstanding work at VfB.

“Christian and I have been working closely and in a trusting manner for a long time,” the 45-year-old said according to “Stuttgarter Nachrichten” and “Stuttgarter Zeitung” a few weeks ago – and thus probably made the decision in favor of Gentner clear.

The former midfielder, who also won the German championship with VfL Wolfsburg in 2009, played 430 Bundesliga games (46 goals) for Stuttgart, Wolfsburg and Union Berlin. He played in 373 competitive games for VfB.

Gentner ended his active career at FC Luzern in Switzerland at the beginning of 2023 and immediately returned to VfB Stuttgart as an official.

Does VfB Stuttgart need a new coach?

Gentner and Co. could soon have a big task ahead of them: finding a new coach. Successful coach Sebastian Hoeneß, who has an exit clause, is hotly traded at Bayer Leverkusen as the successor to Xabi Alonso, who in turn is expected to move to Real Madrid.

“There has been speculation and a lot of revelations in the last few weeks,” Wohlgemuth said recently. “This is no reason for us to doubt the strong and good connection between the club and the coach.”

The VfB sports director explained that there were “many speculations with an indefinable truth content” in the reports. “We don’t think about it too much – at least not at this point.”
