On Saturday afternoon, a strong storm hit Podgora on the Makarska Riviera in Croatia. In just over an hour, a huge amount of rain fell in Podgora.

The heavy rains that fell on the Biokovo mountains in the afternoon flowed down the slopes towards the sea in torrents, carrying everything before them, Slobodna Dalmacija reported. Torrential rains flooded streets, yards, basements and walkways. Houses, restaurants and shops were flooded.

Today they started the rehabilitation. The public company Hrvatske vode is planning several long-term projects that will contribute to better management of infrastructure and watercourses.

Podgora County Petra Radić reminded of the August fire that raged in the hills above Podgora. During the downpour, there was no vegetation to hold back the water, so the torrents also brought with them a large amount of silt and stones. At the same time, obstacles were created for the flow of water, which then spilled out and continued its journey with all its force.

A 43-year-old restaurant is among the heavily damaged or completely destroyed buildings Nevenka Kokić. She told HRT that they lost everything they had. She added that similar floods occurred in 2000, when the same stream as yesterday rose. She pointed the finger at Hrvatske vode, which, in her opinion, which is shared by some other citizens, is not cleaning the stream bed.
