VIENNA EXPANDS THE DISTRICT COOLING NETWORK

In order to meet the growing need for cooling in the city, the Viennese energy supply company Vin Energie (Wien Energie) expanded the district cooling center at the main train station. With 26 megawatts of cooling power, Vin Energi provides cooling at the busiest station in Austria and numerous offices, hotels, and apartments in the surrounding area. The cooling power corresponds to approximately 7,000 air conditioners. “In Vienna, we increasingly rely on environmentally friendly district cooling to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions in the long term. By expanding the district cooling center, we are taking a decisive step towards a greener and more efficient urban infrastructure,” said the member of the City Council for Finance, Peter Hanke.

The district cooling center at Vienna’s main train station was put into operation in 2013 with five compressor chillers running on green energy. Now it has been expanded with two additional cooling machines. “Especially in city centers, the need for more environmentally friendly air conditioning is growing. Soon we will use the same amount of energy for cooling as for heating. In order to be able to meet this need, we are significantly expanding the cooling network and by 2027 we plan to invest around 90 million euros in environmentally friendly cooling technology”, stated the president of the board of Vin Energi, Mihael Štrebl.

This company in the district cooling center does not only produce cooling energy, but uses heat exchangers to use the heat generated during the cooling process, in order to produce environmentally friendly thermal energy and hot water for about 2,500 households.
