VIENNA HAS ALREADY EXCEEDED THE ENERGY PRODUCTION GOAL FOR 2024

As confirmed by the City of Vienna, the goal of achieving the production of solar energy with a total power of 50 MWp in the Austrian capital was exceeded before the beginning of the second half of the year. Currently, around 10,000 photovoltaic systems provide enough electricity to supply more than 57,500 households.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 1,500 new photovoltaic plants have been put into operation, both private and those on public buildings, such as buildings with city apartments. This year, 15 photovoltaic systems with a total capacity of almost 2.5 MWp were installed on the areas owned by the city, and in the next few months the City of Vienna plans to install systems with a total capacity of 8 MWp. However, special challenges lie ahead.

While the goal for this year is the production of electricity with a total power of 210 MWp, an increase in the capacity of solar power plants to 250 MWp is expected by 2025. From 2026, the goal will be even more ambitious: 360 MWp is planned for 2026, 470 MWp for 2027 and finally 800 MWp for 2030. Then around a quarter of Vienna’s population will be supplied with electricity from solar power plants.

The city of Vienna offers its citizens extensive information on the installation of photovoltaic systems as well as various financing, including a package of subsidies for systems with a total power of up to 1,000 kVp. The budget for solar power plants has been raised to 15 million euros per year, and it is possible to apply for financing 365 days a year. The expansion of photovoltaic systems brings the Austrian capital ever closer to the goal of becoming a climate-neutral city by 2040. Photovoltaic panels were also installed in the (New) Museum of the City of Vienna, which is the winner of this year’s Austrian state award for architecture and sustainability.
