From the middle of 2025, e-buses in Vienna will be replaced by new buses powered by batteries and hydrogen. After the European tender, Vienna Lines invests in ten new minibuses from the Italian manufacturer “Rampini”. These buses will be powered by both hydrogen and electricity and are the first minibuses with this technology.
“Rampini Hydron” is powered by a 230 kW electric motor, which draws energy from a 170 kWh battery. During the drive, the hydrogen fuel cell generates new electricity, so the bus can be used all day without recharging thanks to the range-extender technology. This means that charging infrastructure in the city center is no longer needed. “For the purchase and maintenance of new Rampini buses, we are investing together with the Ministry of Climate Protection and the European Union around 12 million euros. These buses make Vienna a European leader in the decarbonization of public transport,” said Peter Hanke, the member of the City Council in charge of public transport. The necessary green hydrogen is produced directly in Vienna.
The purchase of battery- and hydrogen-powered buses is financed by the European Union through the EBIN program of the Austrian Ministry for Climate Protection.
