The city of Vienna is planning the construction of a 700-meter-long pedestrian and bicycle bridge, which will connect different parts of the city and important points in the municipality of Donaustadt. Although this area already has a good connection with tram line 26, the situation for pedestrians and cyclists is not the most favorable. The railway line and the S2 highway are currently insurmountable barriers for the surrounding population, who have to travel more than one kilometer by detours from their place of residence to shops and places for recreation. “We will change that now. We will build one of the longest pedestrian and bicycle bridges in Vienna and thus shorten the roads for the residents of Donaustadt,” said Uli Zima, a member of the city council for planning and mobility.
Planning for this historic project has already begun. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2026. The bridge will be 700 meters long, next to the existing bridge of tram line 26 and will be 4.5 meters wide along its entire length. With the new bridge, the bike paths in Donaustadt will be even better connected. The big action of building bicycle paths in this Viennese municipality started two years ago and so far a total of 14 kilometers have been built. Every year, about 50 projects with 20 kilometers of new bicycle paths are implemented in Vienna, and annual investments amount to about 20 million euros.
