Viktor Orban says that the EU must rethink the sanctions applied to Russia. What is his explanation

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, stated on Friday that the European Union must consider a rethinking of the sanctions that are applied to Russia, since because of this, energy prices remain high, he writes Reuters.

In an interview given to the Hungarian public radio station, Orban stated that “energy prices must be reduced by all means. This means that the sanctions must be reconsidered because, according to the current sanctions policy, energy prices will not decrease.”

Since the beginning of Russia’s war in Ukraine, EU countries have made efforts to become independent from Moscow on an energy level, but Hungary still receives 80-85% of its gas from Russia.

In addition, Viktor Orban is a vocal critic of the EU’s sanctions packages on Russia, maintaining a friendlier relationship with Moscow since the beginning of the invasion. The Hungarian Prime Minister opposed several times, including EU financial support for Kiev, conditioning Budapest’s agreement to obtain benefits for Hungary.
