A violent hailstorm struck Friday evening in a corridor between Saintes (Charente-Maritime) and Cognac (Charente), particularly in the Chérac and Cherves-Richemont areas, severely affecting the vineyards. Up to 80 mm of water and hail fell in a few minutes on some plots, reports the Free Charente.
The losses of the winegrowers are relatively significant, a few days before the official date of the harvest, set in the Cognac region for Monday, September 23. “There, it’s all hands on deck,” a winegrower told the Free Charentebecause you have to pick them quickly” before the berries become too oxidized.
In the Chérac area (Charente-Maritime), the vines were “damaged by the violence of the storm” with “a carpet of hail 2 to 3 cm thick covering certain places” we can read on the Facebook page Weather 17.
