Vitalik Buterin reveals plans for the future of Ethereum

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has in a blogpost his plans for the future of Ethereum explained. The next step for Ethereum, the largest blockchain platform after Bitcoin, is called The Surge and should enormously increase capacity, up to 100,000 transactions per second.

The upgrade consists of two strategies: sharding and layer-2 protocols. With sharding, nodes, crucial nodes in the network, only have to process a portion of the transactions, which significantly increases efficiency. Layer-2 solutions ensure that most computations take place on a secondary layer, offloading the burden on the main blockchain. This tactic is already being used on the Arbitrum, Optimism and Polygon blockchains.

The real challenge in maintaining decentralization and security of the Ethereum network.

It remains unclear how long this will take to achieve this.
