vivo and Huawei Beat Gear Rival in Chinese Market

The summer shopping season in China has been productive for the smartphone market, with shipments rising 4% year-on-year to 69.1 million units in Q3 2024, according to a report from Canalys.

But there is a bigger situation. Local brands such as vivo, Huawei and others strengthened their positions, pushing Apple to the bottom of the top five list.

vivo once again maintains its leadership in smartphone shipments in Q3 2024, with a 3% growth compared to last quarter. Canalys attributed this growth to mid-range product launches. Its shipments increased 25% from the previous year to 13 million units, achieving a solid 19% market share.

Meanwhile, Huawei made a comeback, rising to second place with 10.8 million units shipped and 16% market share. This means a growth of 24% compared to the previous year.

Honor has faced challenges despite the popularity of its new foldable phones, seeing a 13% drop in shipments compared to last year, placing it in third place with 10.3 million devices.

On the other hand, according to the report, Xiaomi managed to achieve fourth place with 10.2 million devices and 15% market share, thanks to its new ecosystem strategy.

However, Apple saw a 6% year-on-year decline in shipments. It could still rank fifth, but Canalys predicts that Apple’s lack of Apple Intelligence services on the iPhone 16 series (not available in China) could impact their growth.
