The time of separate subtitle files is over, because VLC will solve this itself with the help of AI.
VideoLAN reports that its popular video app VLC has now been downloaded six billion times worldwide. To celebrate this, the new feature has been announced. Subtitles are automatically generated and possibly translated via AI.
For this, VLC uses an open source AI model that runs on your own device. So you don’t need an internet connection to generate the subtitles. VLC also promises to support ‘numerous’ languages.
VideoLAN shared the news with a video on X from CES 2025, where the company will have a booth to show a subtitling demo.
