Volkswagen believes electric cars are the future, but is prepared to keep the combustion engine alive if there’s demand

Volkswagen believes that electric cars are the future of the industry. However, the manufacturer will keep thermal models in the range as long as there is demand.

Despite the decline in sales of electric cars worldwide, Volkswagen is confident that they represent the future of the automotive industry. It is also one of the manufacturers that has invested heavily in the development of electric models.

Recently, Volkswagen’s head of sales and marketing, Martin Sander, said that although the future is electric, the company will continue to offer thermal models as long as customers demand them.

In an interview given to the publication Autocarhe said: “We have done our part by investing many billions in new vehicles, a full range of vehicles on new platforms that we offer globally.”

Volkswagen says it will offer thermal cars as long as there is customer demand

“Globally, the heat engine market is still so large that we cannot put a definitive date on the development of combustion engines.”

“Of course sooner or later there will be an end date, driven by customer demand,” he continued. “As long as we see customers asking for thermal vehicles, we will have an offer. Sooner or later, there will be an end date, but I think it’s too early to say when that will happen, especially from a global perspective.” In addition, Sander expressed his frustration with governments not taking steps to facilitate this pure electric future that the company believes in.

He also said that as Volkswagen develops new zero-emission models, their appearance and thermal models will be increasingly similar. He gave as an example the upcoming ID.2, which will have a design similar to that of the new thermal models, rather than that of the EV range.
