The Volkswagen Multivan and California can also be obtained in the eHybrid 4Motion version, which brings a plug-in hybrid setup and AWD drive to all four wheels.
At the heart of the eHybrid 4Motion is a new PHEV system that offers a combined output of 180 kW/245 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The package includes a 1.5-liter TSI Evo2 gasoline engine, paired with a front electric motor and an electric motor on the rear axle.
Volkswagen has also upgraded the six-speed DSG transmission to cope with the increased demands of the hybrid system. Before this update, the only way to get all-wheel drive in the Multivan was to opt for the 2.0 TDI diesel engine.
The new model’s battery is another big improvement. At 19.7 kWh, it almost doubles the capacity of the outgoing Multivan eHybrid package of 10.4 kWh. This allows for an all-electric range of 91 km for the California and 95 km for the Multivan, both of which in EV mode can be driven at speeds of up to 130 km/h.
In addition to having almost double the capacity, the lithium-ion battery is also compatible with 11 kW AC charging and up to 50 kW DC charging.
The new electrified vans are available to order in European markets. In Germany, the Multivan eHybrid 4Motion costs from 70,668 euros, while the California eHybrid 4Motion with extended body and retractable roof starts from 77,772 euros.
