Volkswagen postpones the launch of new generations of electric cars. What is the reason for this decision?

According to the latest reports, the launches of future generations of Volkswagen electric models will be delayed due to software problems.

Volkswagen is preparing a new platform dedicated to electric cars, but it looks like software problems will delay its launch, which will delay the introduction of new electric cars.

The German manufacturer seems to be experiencing software problems in the development process for the new SSP platform dedicated to electric cars. A development delay has reportedly forced the company to delay the launch of several new models – including the successor to the ID.4 SUV, reports Carscoops.

The SSP platform is supposed to be the successor to the MEB architecture, very widespread at the moment in the Volkswagen Group and beyond. Ford builds the new Explorer and Capri on the same platform, for example.

The company’s original plan was to launch the new SSP platform in 2025, but things have changed since then. Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer hinted that the first car to use the SSP platform will be the Golf’s electric successor, which could be launched in 2025.

The new platform from Volkswagen is late to appear

The software for the SSP architecture is being developed by Cariad, and the company wants the new platform to support very fast load times and be compatible with Level 4 autonomous driving.

These software challenges mean it won’t be ready in time, inevitably affecting the development schedule for future products from the German automaker’s lineup, as well as the rest of the group.

According to the latest rumors, the launch of the successor to the Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV has been delayed by 15 months, so we will see the car, most likely, in 2029.

Another reason why the SSP platform is being delayed is to maximize the profitability of MEB-built cars. The platform that underpins the entire ID family will get an update in 2026. Future MEB-based models include the much-anticipated ID.2 hatchback and the ID.1, which will be an entry-level electric model.
