Volkswagen says its affordable ID.2 EV is on schedule and will have an SUV variant

Volkswagen is making steady progress with its plans to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) market, reaffirming that the launch of the ID.2 EV is scheduled for late 2025. This highly anticipated entry-level vehicle will ushering in a new era for the car manufacturer, followed by an SUV version to further expand the range.

A vision for affordable electric mobility

In March 2023, Volkswagen introduced the ID.2all concept, an affordable electric vehicle designed to start at less than $27,000 (25,000 euros). Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, noted that the ID 2 represents the company's ambition to combine advanced technology with exceptional design, marking a significant transformation for the brand.

During the Los Angeles Auto Show, Kai Grünitz, director of technological development at Volkswagen, confirmed that the company's ID line is ready for a comprehensive overhaul. Grünitz hinted that there will be substantial updates starting in 2026, introducing new styling that takes inspiration from Volkswagen's iconic past.

Volkswagen's new design direction will be heavily influenced by the ID 2 concept. Andreas Mindt, the lead designer, was tasked with reinvigorating the brand's aesthetic. Mindt describes the ID. 2 as perfectly aligned with Volkswagen's core values, emphasizing stability and accessibility. The final product, he guarantees, will surpass the already impressive conceptual design.

The ID.2's interior will feature a mix of modern innovation and nostalgic elements, including exclusive "Classic" and "Vintage" driving modes. These features provide the driver with screens reminiscent of beloved models from the Beetle and Golf eras.

Volkswagen wants a transformative launch

Volkswagen has confirmed that the ID.2 will hit the market in late 2025 or early 2026, positioning it as a turning point for the company. Grünitz emphasized the scale of changes customers can expect, noting that these updates will exceed expectations.

An SUV version of the ID.2 will make its debut at the Munich Motor Show in September 2025, and Volkswagen is also planning to launch a sporty GTI variant. Both models will be built on the company's new MEB entry platform.

The ID.2 aims to provide the best of both worlds, offering the space of a Golf at the price of a Polo. Although it has a smaller footprint than the Polo, clever engineering - such as an extended wheelbase - will maximize interior space for passengers and cargo.

With a range of up to 450 km, the ID. 2 was designed to meet the needs of everyday drivers. without compromising performance.
