Volvo produced one million copies of the XC40 SUV at its plant in Belgium

Volvo has announced that it has produced one million XC40/EX40 SUVs at its plant in Ghent, Belgium.

The Volvo car factory in Ghent, Belgium was opened in 1965. The first cars manufactured here were the Volvo 120, 121 and 122, also known as the Amazon. The XC40 SUV is also currently manufactured here, as well as its electric version, the EX40.

Volvo announced a major milestone in its car production with the construction of the one millionth example of the compact SUV. The XC40 was presented seven years ago, and now the Swedes announce that they have produced one million copies at the factory in Ghent.

“Today we passed a very important milestone in the history of Volvo Car Gent and I am very proud to announce that we have produced one million XC40/EX40s,” says Stefan Fesser, Ghent plant manager. “With our dedicated and highly skilled team, we are pursuing our electrification strategy, demonstrated by the fact that we have already built more than 175,000 fully electric versions of this model.”

The XC40 is the second best-selling model in the Volvo range

Launched in 2017, the Volvo XC40 is the second most popular model in the Swedish manufacturer’s range. In 2023, only the XC60 surpassed the XC40 in terms of sales in the Volvo range. The same thing happens in 2024.

From 2020, the XC40 also became available as a fully electric version. The car is also designed to improve over time through over-the-air updates, while being powered by in-house developed electric motors.

Earlier this year, the all-electric XC40 was renamed the EX40 as part of Volvo’s strategy to adapt model names for all-electric cars. While the last plug-in hybrid version of the XC40 was built last year, the XC40 name remains for the mild-hybrid version, which is still in production at the Ghent plant.

By 2030, Volvo aims to have between 90 and 100 percent of all its cars sold worldwide be electric or PHEV. The remaining 10% will be mild-hybrid models.
