Rumors have recently been circulating about a comeback by US superstar Lindsey Vonn. Alpine ski ace Sofia Goggia has now commented on the speculation.
“Yes, there are rumors about it. I’ve heard the rumors, but I don’t know what’s true and what’s not,” Goggia said in an interview with Eurosport.
The Italian continued: “We all have to be surprised. But the fact that she’s skiing again shows that she’s healthy – and I’m very happy about that. It would of course be a great comeback. I’m very excited to see what step she takes decides.”
The Swiss “Blick” claims to have learned during research into Team USA that the former ski racer Vonn may be working on a comeback and would like to start as the forerunner at the World Cup races in Beaver Creek in December.
If this test is positive, the 40-year-old could take part in races again, it is said.
In 2019, Vonn announced her retirement from the alpine skiing circus. Persistent knee problems in particular forced her to end her active career. Vonn only received an artificial knee joint in April.
Vonn is one of the most successful female ski racers of all time. Her CV includes 82 individual victories in the World Cup, two medals at the World Championships and one at the Olympic Games.
Goggia is aiming for a comeback after OP
Goggia could also make her comeback in Beaver Creek.
The 31-year-old was seriously injured in a training fall in February, broke her tibia and tibial ankle and had to undergo surgery.
The Italian is optimistic about the upcoming season, even if she still has to be patient. “The goal is to be ready for the first speed races in December in Beaver Creek,” said the 2018 Olympic champion.
But first she wants to concentrate fully on training. “I’m currently not focusing on the giant slalom or the races in general. My focus is on building stability, health and the ability to bring my potential to the skis. Everything else will come step by step,” emphasized Goggia.
