Wales’ first minister resigns after controversy over campaign cash

After just four months as First Minister of Wales, Vaughan Gething has decided to resign from his post on Tuesday, he stated in a statement according to the British media Sky News.

“This morning I have taken the difficult decision to begin the process of stepping down as leader of the Welsh Labor Party and thus also as First Minister”, says Vaughan Gething.

The announcement comes shortly after four ministers resigned from the Welsh Government in protest at Gething’s leadership. The outgoing government leader says that he had hoped that during the summer there would be time for reflection, reconstruction and renewal of the party under his leadership.

“I now recognize that it is not possible”, says Vaughan Gething.

The First Minister has been under increasing pressure due to a controversial donation of 200,000 British pounds – just under 1.8 million kroner – to his political campaign. The funds were donated by the company Dauson Environmental Group Ltd., whose owner has previously been punished for violating environmental laws.
