Chinese President Xi Jinping urged G20 leaders on Monday to support efforts to de-escalate the war in Ukraine and find a “political solution”, state media reported.

His remarks at the G20 summit in Brazil came shortly after Ukraine received permission from the United States to use long-range missiles against targets in Russia.

“The G20 should support the United Nations and its Security Council to play a more important role and support all efforts that contribute to the peaceful resolution of crises,” Xi Jinping said, as reported by China’s state broadcaster CCTV.

He urged leaders to avoid escalation of fighting, to help “cool down the crisis in Ukraine and find a political solution.”

It will soon be three years since the Russian attack on Ukraine.

China presents itself as a neutral belligerent and says that, unlike the US and other Western countries, it will not send lethal aid to either side.

However, it remained a close political and economic ally of Russia. NATO members have called Beijing a “decisive warmonger”, stressing that Beijing has never condemned Russian aggression.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Monday that his country will send 4,000 artificial intelligence-guided drones to Ukraine after outgoing US President Joe Biden changed its long-range missile policy in January.

In his speech on Monday, Xi Jinping also called for efforts to strengthen the multilateral trading system and warned against the “politicization of economic issues,” without naming specific countries.
