The conflict between Ukraine e Russia continues. In the last few hours, Moscow has declared that it is committed to repelling a new Ukrainian offensive in the Russian border region of Kursk, where Kiev’s forces already control several hundred square kilometers since the assault occurred in August 2024.
According to Russian statements, “the assault group of the Ukrainian army was neutralized by artillery and aviation” and “the operation to eliminate units of the Ukrainian forces is underway.” However, pro-Ukrainian bloggers argue that the situation on the ground is very different.
Ukraine, which is preparing for the fourth year of war in a situation of deep economic crisis, has not yet released official statements on this new operation. According to Western and Ukrainian sources, the Kremlin forces are now supported in the area by thousands of North Korean soldiers. The head of the Ukrainian presidential administration, Andriy Iermak, posted a direct message on Telegram: “Kursk region, good news. Russia is getting what it deserves.”

This communication was criticized by Ukrainian MP Oleksii Goncharenko, known for his critical attitude towards the government: “I don’t understand why it is necessary to make an official report.” He added: “Maybe it would be better to do it after the operation is over?”
Zelensky: “Trump can end the war and put pressure on Putin”
Meanwhile, the president Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that his new US counterpart, Donald Trumpdid not invite him to the January 20 inauguration ceremony. In a long interview with the American podcaster Lex Fridman, Zelensky explained: “There are leaders who are used to showing up even without having been invited – just look at what Putin did with Ukraine – but I can’t afford it, because of the war and the necessary security measures.”
Asked if he would like to be in Washington DC on January 20, Zelensky responded that this would only happen if “President Trump personally invites me.” He then concluded: “If he invites me, I will come.”
However, according to Zelensky, a “strong Donald Trump” could be instrumental in ending the war in Ukraine. The Ukrainian president underlined that the head of the White House will be fundamental to guaranteeing the country’s security, paving the way for a negotiated agreement also supported by European nations.
“Trump and I will find an agreement and offer strong security guarantees, together with Europe, and then we can talk to the Russians,” Zelensky said.
“We and Trump come first, and Europe will support Ukraine’s position. I think President Trump not only has the will, but also the capabilities, and it’s not just talk. I count on him a lot, and I think let our people do the same.
