Russia is attacking Kharkiv in the northeast of Ukraine with ballistic missiles, the mayor of the city, Ihori Terekhov, announced on Wednesday morning.
“Kharkiv is under massive rocket attack. A series of explosions were heard in the city, ballistic missiles are still flying towards the city,” he wrote on the Telegram social network.
The regional governor reported seven Russian strikes.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday that its forces had shot down 59 Ukrainian drones last night.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported Kalibr cruise missiles fired from the Black Sea region, but it is not yet clear what their targets were.
Moscow has been trying to improve its position on the battlefield in eastern Ukraine in recent months ahead of Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January.
The US president-elect has promised to quickly end the almost three-year-old conflict in Ukraine.
The Russian military says it has captured more than 190 Ukrainian settlements this year. Tired and underarmed, Kyiv’s forces are struggling to hold their own.
