Polish security forces prevented a sabotage operation organized by Russia and Belarus, the aim of which was to destabilize Poland, Polish Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski, who also holds the position of Minister for Digital Affairs, announced on Monday, writes TASR based on a Reuters report.
Warsaw has repeatedly accused Moscow of trying to destabilize Poland because of the role it plays in supplying military aid to neighboring Ukraine. Russia rejects these accusations.
A group of saboteurs operating in Belarus, allegedly in cooperation with Russia, infiltrated executive functions at the local and national level, including state enterprises that fulfilled military contracts, the deputy prime minister said.
“Belarusian and Russian foreign services … had a specific objective – to obtain information, blackmail individuals and institutions, and de facto conduct cyber warfare,” Gawkowski said, adding that the intent to steal data for blackmail was thwarted.
The number of cyber attacks targeting Polish organizations and institutions, including logistics companies that provide military supplies to Ukraine, has doubled since last year. “Many times there are over a thousand incidents per day,” said Gawkowski, who reported in June that Poland had averted several cyberattacks on critical infrastructure.
