Is the new BMW 1 Series with its new style and new micro-hybrid engine better than the old one?
On the Munich side, we consider the BMW 1 Series F70 from 2024 to be a real novelty. However, this is in reality a profound evolution of the previous model (F40). Even with vision problems, the aesthetic similarities are obvious! This fourth opus of the “A” in fact retains the platform and structure of the predecessor. It is nevertheless the first in the line to be driven by its front wheels.
Improved driving
The new BMW 1 Series is dressed in a slightly more dynamic looking body. It has a more plunging hood and a less massive grille, which also changes style, with new oblique and vertical bars. In terms of size, it is 42 mm longer. In width, it measures 1m80. On the other hand, although the new generation of the sedan is longer, it loses roominess. To our great regret, the Series 1 is unfortunately no more roomy than the previous one. Neither is better off in terms of trunk, with 380 L for the most powerful M135 version. It’s even worse on the micro-hybrid versions. The trunk volume is announced at 300 L.
On the other hand, the engineers have carried out a lot of work on the rigidity of the body, the steering and the running gear, including in particular new hydraulic stop shock absorbers. As a result, what was until now firm and understeering has gained in dynamism, precision in turns and comfort. Nothing very marked, but it’s still a catch! Above all, it is now equipped with driving aids, and even comes with a level 2 autonomous driving system, which allows you to just keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel.
The BMW 1 Series is less inclined to drink
The main changes concern the engine of the 120 and no longer the 120i (the “i” has now disappeared, this vowel now designating electric BMWs). This swaps the old 178 hp 2.0 liter four-cylinder for the 170 hp 1.5 liter three-cylinder of the X1/X2 and Mini Countryman. A less efficient light hybridization block, but discreet and sufficiently vigorous to move the 1476 kg without shouting. The seven-speed automatic transmission that comes with it is smooth and responsive. It also brings its ration of pleasure while contributing, thanks to the 20 hp electric motor which is hidden in its crankcase, to reduce the average fuel consumption. Less 1.2 l/100 km compared to the ex-120i. Huge !
The other big novelty, the BMW Curved Display. This panel brings together the digital instrumentation and the multimedia screen. The BMW OS9 operating system allows them to be very smooth and responsive. Unfortunately for those less comfortable with technology, 95% of functions now go through the latter, including air conditioning control. The ergonomics are affected… We take comfort in the impeccable finish and the heated seats as standard.
Overall, the BMW 1 Series is very well finished and progressing. But the F70 remains too expensive considering its modest endowment, as in the past… The base price is up by €650.
