The Washington Commanders have added cornerback Marshon Lattimore to their team just a few hours before the NFL trade deadline. The 28-year-old comes via trade from the New Orleans Saints.
As several NFL insiders reported at the same time, the Commanders did it and were able to win perhaps the most sought-after player on deadline day. In addition to Washington, the Kansas City Chiefs and other teams are said to have been interested in Lattimore.
The Commanders are giving up a third-round pick and a sixth-round pick for the cornerback. The teams also trade a fourth-round pick (from the Commanders) and a fifth-round pick (Saints).
However, it is still unclear when Lattimore will be able to play for his new team. The cornerback is currently suffering from a thigh injury and was recently sidelined. Lattimore played his last game for the Saints on October 27th against Los Angeles Chargers.
NFL: Cheap deal for the Commanders for now
Because the Saints recently restructured Lattimore’s contract, the whole thing is quite a lucrative deal for the Commanders, at least financially speaking. You only have to pay the minimum for Lattimore this season. If the cornerback proves himself, there would probably be new discussions in the spring.
The pass defender came to the NFL in 2017 as the eleventh pick in the first round and delivered straight away for the Saints. He made the Pro Bowl four times in his first five years in the league. In recent years, minor injuries have repeatedly slowed him down, but the 2017 Defensive Rookie of The Year certainly still has plenty of qualities to help the Commanders.
And the Commanders can certainly use this, because in addition to the spectacular offense, the defense has recently been in the shadows.
