watchOS 11 Removed Four Watch Faces from the Apple Watch

Apple giveth, but apparently Apple also taketh. WatchOS 11 may offer three new watch faces for the Apple Watch, but it also quietly killed four.

A new version of watchOS usually means one or more new watch faces. This year, there are three: Flux, which displays the time in irregular, playful numbers as the screen fills horizontally with every minute. And Reflections, a classic watch face where the reflection changes as you turn your wrist. And the photo watch faces have been revamped: you can turn your own photos into professional-looking faces in a variety of shades, with the time beeping out from behind, say, your dog.

But quietly, some dials have also disappeared: four have been retired, which is a first, reports 9to5Mac. Gone is the original Chronograph watch face, which has been included since the very first Apple Watch in 2015. The more complete Chronograph Pro was already added in watchOS 7, and now the original is gone.

Explorer disappeared

Also gone: Explorer, an understated but quirky black face with red hands. It debuted with watchOS 3, which also marked the debut of the first Apple Watch with its own cellular connection. If you had a cellular connection, the Explorer face would display reception strength—the only watch face to do so, without requiring you to set up a complication. Explorer lived up to its name, looking a bit like the kind of watch you might wear on a camping trip.

Furthermore, the older Numbers license plate is gone, where you saw an analog clock with the current time in numbers in the corner and possibly a complication. And finally, the Siri watch face is gone. That was ahead of its time, and was actually what the smart stack is now: a row of relevant widgets, such as a timer, your agenda, music and more. Since last year, that function has been in a turn of your digital crown, so the watch face is no longer necessary.
