“We all remain in the field every day to deal with possible extreme weather events”

“The expectations of the citizens are high and our responsibility is great” emphasized the regional governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias, in a meeting with the village vice-regional governors, which ended late in the afternoon with the aim of strengthening the preparation of Attica to deal with possible extreme weather phenomena.

Preventive measures on the carpet

Mr. Hardalias emphasized the need to prioritize interventions in high-risk areas, within the framework of the holistic plan that has been drawn up. The preventive actions that must be taken immediately, in order to reduce the risk of flooding phenomena, to ensure the protection of citizens and their properties, and to strengthen the resilience of infrastructure in possible severe weather conditions, were put on the carpet.

Particular emphasis was placed on the vigilance and continuous presence of all District executives in the field, each in their area of responsibility, for the immediate response to potential problems and the recording of needs in real time.

During the meeting, the procedure and timetable for the tendering of the first 54 flood protection projects in the first quarter of 2024, out of a total of 158 projects that should be launched, was also discussed, as well as the need for closer cooperation with all the municipalities of Attica, with aiming at the best possible coordination, the timely exchange of information and the joint management of situations that may arise. The regional governor underlined that effective cooperation is “key” to the protection of human life, property and the natural environment.

“Our responsibility is great”

In his statements after the meeting, Nikos Hardalias noted: “I asked the deputy governors to be constantly in the neighborhoods. I want all of us to be in the field, next to the citizens. Times are tough, citizens’ expectations are high and our responsibility is great. In response to the concerns and anxieties of the residents of the Basin, we respond with actions. With specific projects, interventions and programming. Anything that concerns human life, property and the natural environment is a non-negotiable priority for us. The reason we fight is man. They are our fellow citizens, our neighborhoods, our societies. It is their concerns and expectations, to which we owe, in good cooperation with the municipalities and the co-competent ministries, to give substantial answers every day”.
