“We are playing with fire”: Lithuania’s defense funding lags behind Poland, Latvia and Estonia

The outgoing government has planned that next year’s defense budget will be similar to this year’s. Minister of National Defense Laurynas Kasčiūnas is convinced that the new government will be able to significantly increase defense spending.

At that time, the president’s chief advisor for national security, Kęstutis Budrys, was convinced that the defense budget would have to be increased by borrowing.

Poland – 4.7 percent, Latvia – 3.45 percent, Estonia – also about 3.5 percent. This is the planned GDP defense spending of our closest neighbors next year.

And here the principle is clear – one should not joke in the face of threats, but Lithuania plans to spend 3.03 percent on defense next year.
