On Friday, November 22, in Budapest, the agreement was signed for Romania’s integration into the land Schengen. However, the integration is not immediate and complete. For our country, there will be at least six months from 2025 in which border controls will continue, to mitigate the “potential change in migration routes”.

In the first phase, from January 1, only the controls between Bulgaria and Greece will be abolished.

The Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union published the joint statement signed by the Ministers of the Interior from Romania, Hungary, Austria and Bulgaria on Friday, in Budapest, based on which the Prime Ministers Marcel Ciolacu and Viktor Orban conveyed that Romania will be received in the terrestrial Schengen area from January 1.

Based on the agreed commitments, the document also provides, the countries involved will initiate the necessary steps for the formal adoption of the decision of the JAI Council, to establish the date on which land controls with and between Romania and Bulgaria will be lifted. The JAI meeting will take place on December 12, 2024 and will formalize the initialed agreement on Friday, November 22.

The President of the European Commission and the President of the European Parliament welcomed the conclusion of the agreement in the informal meeting, and Ursula von der Leyen even spoke of “a stronger Schengen, from 2025”.

On the official website of the Hungarian presidency of the European Council, major progress has been recorded regarding the reduction of illegal migration in Romania, Bulgaria, but also in Austria – SEE HERE.

This week, PSD Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu sent a triumphalist message regarding Romania’s accession to Schengen.

“I am glad to be in Budapest today, with Prime Minister Orban. Last time, when we met in Bucharest, some people smiled when Prime Minister Orban quoted from a famous movie and said that it was “the beginning of a beautiful friendship”. Time proved us right and today we are together again to give an important message to our citizens”, stated Ciolacu.
