“We have a good memory, although we are not vengeful,” says Russia after threatening Portugal over its support for Ukraine: day 940 of the war

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation said this Friday that there will be “retaliation measures” against Portugal and other European Union countries for sending military equipment such as Kamov helicopters to Ukraine.

“We have already announced that we view the delivery of Kamov (helicopters) to Ukraine as a hostile measure towards our country, a measure that is part of the docile and unconscious path taken by Portugal and other European Union countries along the path designed by Washington,” said the official representative of Russian diplomacy, Maria Zakharova.

In a video conference on the sidelines of the 4th Euro-Asian Women’s Forum, which ends today in St. Petersburg, Zakharova indicated that “retaliation measures will be studied in secret” and that “everyone” will know when Russia begins to apply them.

“We remember these actions when defining bilateral relations. As everyone knows, we have a good memory, although we are not vengeful,” said the spokesperson when asked by the Lusa news agency about the sending of six Portuguese Kamov Ka-32A11B medium helicopters to Ukraine to support Kiev in the fight against the Russian invasion.

Portugal is also on a list approved by the Russian Council of Ministers, which indicates 47 countries accused of imposing “attitudes that contradict traditional Russian values”, according to a message published on the messaging service state agency RIA/Novosti. Among the countries are also the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Greece.

Kiev says it does not underestimate Russian threats to Portugal and thanks the country for its support

The Ukrainian government said it did not underestimate Russia’s threats to Portugal and other EU member states. “I don’t want to overestimate, but I also can’t underestimate, in any way, Russia’s threats. They are always serious and, if they threaten, they do something,” said a Ukrainian source, when asked by Lusa in Kiev about the statements made by Russian diplomacy.

“What can they do against the Portuguese? I’m not an expert on that, but maybe in economic terms, I don’t know,” the same Ukrainian source added to Lusa. Even so, members of the Ukrainian government interviewed by Lusa in the Ukrainian capital said they “greatly value” relations between Kiev and Lisbon, speaking of “fruitful communications” between the two countries.

⇒ Ukrainian authorities advised residents of Kiev to stay indoors on Friday as air pollution blanketed the capital, partly caused by fires in the region. Ukraine’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources said the pollution was the result of peatland burning and other forest fires in the region, combined with temperature fluctuations on the cusp of autumn. Kiev topped a list of the most polluted cities this morning, according to a real-time database from IQAir, a Swiss company that monitors air quality levels.

⇒ Russia would suspect the Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk and had been drawing up plans to stop it for several months, according to a set of documents allegedly seized by the Ukrainian army from abandoned Russian positions in the region, the jornal “The Guardian”.

⇒ Zelensky said he hopes his plan for victory against Russia will have Joe Biden’s support for “quick decisions” by December, days before meeting his US counterpart. “As far as the plan for victory is concerned, I would like to be consistent and I will discuss all the details, first of all, with the President of the United States, because, first of all, the decisions about this plan will depend on him, although also on other allies“, these.

⇒ Ukraine has banned the use of Telegram, a popular messaging service founded by Russian Pavel Durov, on the official electronic devices of most of its military personnel, citing security reasons. Anonymously, a source in Ukraine’s security services told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the military “often uses Telegram to discuss confidential work issues”. “It is a major source of information leaks because Telegram is easily hacked” by the Russians, he explained.

⇒ Russia has rejected the possibility of a meeting between its foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, and his US counterpart, Antony Blinken, at the UN General Assembly in New York. “No, of course not, what can we talk about with him?”, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov replied brusquely when asked by the Russian news agency Ria Novosti about the possibility of such a meeting, according to the French news agency AFP.
