We have determined our area and organized its infrastructure to a large extent.

Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum met with Australian Minister of Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen via video conference.

According to a statement from the ministry, the two ministers, who met via teleconference, exchanged views on the work carried out on the candidacy of both countries to host the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, planned to be held in 2026, and on possible cooperation.

Minister Kurum pointed out that Turkey, like Australia, also attaches importance to hosting COP31.

Stating that he believes that COP31 will strengthen Turkey’s successful work on climate change, Kurum said, “As Turkey, we think that climate change is now a matter of national security. We work with the belief that adaptation to climate change is a green development initiative for our country. In this sense, as Turkey, we want to gather all parties in our country and let everyone see Turkey’s fight against climate change on site.”

The institution emphasized that Turkey will be an example for developing countries, and said that the country plays a critical bridge role between developed and developing countries regarding the climate crisis due to its geographical location, economic structure and climate diversity.

– “WE ARE PLANNING A COP FOCUSED ON ZERO WASTE”

Explaining that Turkey is not a fossil fuel exporting country, Kurum said:

“Therefore, we aim to show all countries that goals such as green development and more active and efficient use of renewable energy resources can be achieved without being an oil country. On the other hand, we are an important industrial country and a raw material producer. With this feature, we aim to better introduce our work that will set an example for countries in the green transformation of sectors.”

Minister Kurum noted that Turkey is located in the Mediterranean Basin, where the effects of climate change are felt the most, and that sustainable and innovative solutions are being developed against climate change.

Stating that Turkey proposed a Zero Waste-focused COP, Kurum said, “We are planning a Zero Waste-focused COP. We set out with a low-emission COP plan in both transportation and the supply chain. We determined our COP area and organized its infrastructure to a large extent.”

“We are very keen to host COP31, we are asking for your support. Thank you for your work in the earthquake zone,” said Chris Bowen, Australia’s Minister of Climate Change and Energy.
