Meteorological winter will set in the capital region this weekend, said Evgeniy Tishkovets, leading specialist at the Phobos weather center. According to him, heavy snowfalls will cover Moscow on the night of November 23, and in the morning residents of the capital will already be able to enjoy a real winter landscape. In the city, the depth of snow cover will be 4-6 cm, in the region – up to 14 cm.
After the rains that hit the Moscow region, the capital will be covered with snow – the onset of meteorological winter is expected this weekend. Leading specialist of the Phobos weather center Evgeny Tishkovets shared this forecast in his Telegram channel.
According to him, “Friday’s respite” in the atmosphere of Central Russia after record rainfall will be short-lived.
“On Saturday, the capital region will be attacked by a fairly active Balkan cyclone “Caetano” from the southwest, which will cause heavy wet snowfalls in Moscow, resulting in 9-11 mm of precipitation in terms of water. Waking up in the morning on the first day off, Muscovites will find a snowy landscape outside the window – the formation of a stable snow cover will begin in the city, the height of which will be 4-6 cm, which exactly corresponds to the climate norm for November 23,” says the expert.
In the east, south and north of the Moscow region, the height of the snow cover will be 1-5 cm, and in the west, according to him, “real December snowdrifts” 9-14 cm high will appear, which will last until spring, the forecaster emphasized. According to the expert’s forecast, there will be so much snow that it will be possible to open the ski season.
Already on Sunday, November 24, meteorological winter will set in the capital and there will be a steady transition of the average daily air temperature through zero towards negative values. The weather will improve, perhaps sun, no precipitation, and light frost.
“The next week will begin with partly cloudy and cold weather: in the morning there will be invigorating frosts down to -3…-8 °C, in the afternoon – 0…-5 °C. Winter will begin a permanent offensive on all fronts,” Tishkovets concluded.
Tatyana Pozdnyakova, chief specialist of the Meteonovosti news agency, gave a similar forecast in her Telegram channel. According to her information, the zone of precipitation in the form of snow and sleet will spread to the capital and the entire Moscow region.
“In 12 hours, according to model calculations, 7-12 mm of precipitation will fall. The most intense precipitation will again fall on the western regions. When the air temperature is about 0 °C, wet snow is expected to accumulate. In Moscow, by the morning of November 23, a snow cover with a height of 5-10 cm will form. And on Saturday afternoon another 2-3 cm of snow will be added,” the forecaster said.

“On Saturday, the weather in the capital region will be influenced by an active cyclone, which European meteorologists called Cayetano. He will come to us from the southwest. The weather in the capital will be cloudy, with precipitation in the form of snow and sleet. They will start at the end of the night. Over Saturday, up to a third of November’s monthly precipitation may fall in Moscow. Temporary snow cover is possible, which could range from 2 to 7 cm by Sunday morning,” Leus shared.
According to the forecaster, in addition to heavy rainfall, strong, gusty winds are expected – especially on Saturday night and in the first half of November 23.
In connection with the impending bad weather, an emergency warning was issued by the capital’s Ministry of Emergency Situations.
“According to the forecasts of Roshydromet forecasters, in the second half of the night, continuing until 12:00 on November 23, precipitation is expected in Moscow in places, heavy in places (snow, sleet), increased wind with gusts of up to 15 m/s. In some areas, wet snow is deposited on trees and wires,” the department said in a statement.
The ministry advised motorists to reduce speed and increase the distance from cars in front, avoid sudden maneuvers and park vehicles away from trees. Pedestrians are advised to avoid billboards and rickety structures, avoid taking cover under trees, and avoid leaving children unattended.
