Problems in several areas were caused by the heavy rainfall that has been affecting Attica since Christmas Eve. Storm Elena has brought heavy rains, cold, strong winds and snow to the mountains, and according to forecasters, wintry weather conditions will prevail until the end of the week.
The Fire Service received 30 calls for pumping water and cutting trees in Attica, while the movement of vehicles in some parts of the road network was conducted with difficulty, due to the water that has accumulated on the road surface. The major problems occurred in Poseidon Avenuewhich was flooded, as a result of which traffic was interrupted at the height of Alimos yesterday. Vehicular traffic was fully restored at approximately 09:00 this morning.
At the same time, due to the occurrence of adverse weather phenomena, the police departments of Grevena, Kastoria, Kozani and Florina are informing drivers that it is mandatory to equip cars with anti-skid chains. Parnithos avenue after the cable car to the casino remains closed since last night, as, due to the cold, there is a risk of frost.
The areas that will be in the “deep red” of bad weather
According to the meteorologist Clearchos Marousakis, a new recurrence of the weather is expected from Friday evening and for the same areas again, that is, those located from the height of Halkidiki and further south and from the Pindos mountain range and further east.
“With the bad weather persisting for areas located further east of the Pindos mountain range, we will reach until Friday, when there will be rain, storms mainly in sea coastal areas and snow even at lower altitudes, while stormy northerlies will make it difficult enough to a lot of sea transport to the Aegean side” he wrote in his post on Facebook.
The reason for the new recurrence of the weather, is the “new disturbance from the region of Ukraine this time which will move as we see on our first map with the letter “X” and the intense blue color to the south southwest invading into the Aegean.
So this time, in addition to the rains – storms and the snowy mountainous semi-mountains, it is very likely that we will see heavy snowfalls – snow storms even at very low altitudes.
Evia will be in the deep red of this snowy season, as well as the islands of the north-eastern Aegean will see snow, even temporarily, while after Evia, eastern and southern Thessaly, Attikoboiotia, mountainous semi-mountainous areas of the Peloponnese and even the mountains of Crete (in terms of snowfall).
For Attica
Thick snow in all the mountains – semi-mountains with increased chances of the snow reaching even lower in the north of the county. Snowstorms quite possible!
Why are we talking about blizzards?
The disturbance we expect will have strong support aloft from an organized polar air mass. Passing this mass from the warmer Aegean will create intense instability.
Due to the low temperatures and low in the atmosphere, it is quite possible to form snowstorms, i.e. dense snowfall accompanied by electrical discharges (lightning). This also means very fast snowfall even if the surface temperatures will not be so favorable.

How the bad weather will move
Today Thursday, heavy rains are expected in eastern Thessaly (Magnesia), the Sporades, Evia, eastern Sterea (mainly the region of Fthiotida – Boeotia), the Cyclades (mainly western and northern), Attica and eastern Peloponnese.
Stormy northeasterly winds of intensity 8 and locally 9 Beaufort will blow in Thrace, Thrace, the southernmost parts of Halkidiki, the northeast Aegean, the Sporades, and Evia.
Snowfall will occur: in the mountainous continental trunk, the highlands of Crete and locally in semi-mountainous areas of the central and northern country.
In the mountains of eastern Macedonia and Thrace, the snowfall will be heavy.
MACEDONIA, THRACE
Weather: Increased clouds with sporadic rains. Snowfall will occur in the mountains and locally in semi-mountainous areas, which will be dense from the afternoon in the mountains of eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
Winds: In the west north northwest 4 to 6, temporary seas up to 7 Beaufort. In the east north northeast 6 to 8 and in the sea local 9 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 03 to 08 to 09 degrees Celsius. In western Macedonia 3 to 4 degrees lower.
IONIAN ISLANDS, EPIROS, WEST STEREA, WEST PELOPONNISOS
Weather: Temporarily increased clouds with temporary local rains, mainly in the western Peloponnese in the morning hours.
Snowfall will occur in the continental highlands.
Winds: East northeast 4 to 5 and in the Ionian locally 6 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 06 to 14 to 15 degrees Celsius. In the interior of Epirus 4 to 6 degrees lower. In the morning and evening hours in places in the interior of Epirus, there will be frost.
EASTERN STEREA, EVIA, EASTERN PELOPONNISOS
Weather: Increased clouds with sporadic rain and storms. The effects will be locally strong in eastern Sterea (mainly the region of Fthiotida – Boeotia), in Evia and from the midday hours in the eastern Peloponnese.
Snowfall will occur in the mountains.
Winds: In Evia north northeast 6 to 8 gradually strengthening locally 9 Beaufort. In the rest of the areas from northern directions 5 to 7, gradually strengthening locally 8 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 07 to 13 to 14 degrees Celsius.
CYCLADES, CRETE
Weather: Temporarily increased clouds with local rains and sporadic storms. The effects will be locally strong in the western and northern Cyclades.
Snowfall will occur in the mountains of Crete.
Winds: In the Cyclades east northeast 3 to 5 in the west 6 local 7 Beaufort. In Crete initially variable 3 to 4, gradually north-northeasterly 4 to 5, in the west 5 to 6 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 09 to 15 degrees Celsius.
EAST AEGEAN ISLANDS – DODECANISE
Weather: Temporarily increased clouds with local rains and mainly in the Dodecanese sporadic storms.
Winds: In the north east northeast 6 to 8 and locally 9 Beaufort. In the south east southeast 4 to 5, locally 6 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 10 to 16 degrees Celsius. In the north the maximum is 2 to 3 degrees lower.
THESSALY
Weather: Increased clouds with sporadic rains and mainly in the sea-coastal sections isolated storms. The effects will be locally strong in the Sporades and in eastern Thessaly (Magnesia).
Snowfall will occur in the mountains.
Winds: North northeast 6 to 7, in the Sporades 8 gradually 9 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 04 to 10 to 11 degrees and in the Sporades from 09 to 13 degrees Celsius.
ATTICA
Weather: Cloudy with sporadic rains and storms in places strong mainly from the midday hours.
Winds: Northerly 5 to 6, gradually to the east 7 to 8 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 07 to 13 to 14 degrees Celsius.
THESSALONIKI
Weather: Increased clouds with rain. Snowfall will occur in the surrounding mountains and semi-mountains.
Winds: North northwest 4 to 5, in the sea locally up to 6 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 04 to 08 degrees Celsius.
FORECAST FOR FRIDAY 27-12-2024
In the eastern country increased clouds with local rains and in the Cyclades, Crete and the southernmost parts of the Dodecanese sporadic storms.
In western Greece, a few temporarily increased clouds.
Snowfall will occur in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of eastern Macedonia and Thrace and gradually in the rest of the central and northern continental highlands.
The winds will blow north northeast, in the west 4 to 6 Beaufort, in the east 6 to 8 and temporarily in the Aegean locally 9 Beaufort, with weakening from the afternoon hours. In the area of Kastellorizos there will be easterly winds of 5 to 6 Beaufort, weakening from the afternoon.
The temperature will drop, mainly in the north where it will not exceed 5 to 7 degrees Celsius. In the western mainland and the Ionian Sea it will reach 13 to 14 degrees, in the rest of the mainland 10 to 11 degrees and in the eastern island country 14 to 15 degrees Celsius. In the morning and evening hours there will be frost in places on the mainland, possibly locally strong in the north-western mainland.
FORECAST FOR SATURDAY 12-28-2024
In the eastern and southern country increased clouds with local rains and mainly in the southern maritime and coastal sporadic storms. Snowfall will occur in the mountains and semi-mountains of the eastern mainland, in the northern Aegean and Crete. The phenomena in the northern continents will gradually stop from noon. In the rest of the country, a few clouds temporarily increased in the morning hours.
Winds will be west east northeast 4 to 6 Beaufort with weakening from noon. In the east, north-northeast winds will blow 5 to 7 and in the Aegean locally 8 Beaufort.
The temperature will not change appreciably. In the morning and evening hours there will be frost in places on the mainland, locally strong in the northwest.
FORECAST FOR SUNDAY 29-12-2024
In the Ionian and the western mainlands, generally clear weather with few clouds. In the rest of the country, temporarily increased cloudiness with local rains in eastern Sterea, Evia, eastern Peloponnese, the Aegean islands and Crete and sporadic storms in the southern maritime-coastal areas.
Temporary snowfalls will occur in the mountains of eastern Sterea and Evia.
Winds will blow from north directions in the west 3 to 5, in the east 5 to 7 and in the Aegean locally 8 Beaufort with gradual weakening from the evening hours.
The temperature will rise slightly mainly in the west.
FORECAST FOR MONDAY 12-30-2024
In the west, central and north few local clouds.
In the rest of the country, temporarily increased clouds with local rains in the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese.
Winds will blow from north directions in the west 3 to 5, in the east 4 to 6 and in the Aegean locally 7 Beaufort.
