The Western Balkans should further strengthen regional economic integration and deepen economic cooperation with the members of the European Union (EU), said the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Policy and Minister of Economic Development, Nik Đeljošaj.

At the Conference of Ministers of Economy of the Western Balkans in Berlin, he pointed out that the strengthening and diversification of the economy, sustainable development, green transition and transport infrastructure projects are in the long-term focus of the work of the Government of Montenegro.

“Montenegro is fully committed to the improvement of regional cooperation through the implementation of the Action Plan for a common regional market and the CEFTA Agreement, as important instruments for accelerating the economic integration of the Western Balkans region with the EU market,” pointed out Đeljošaj.

He pointed out that the Western Balkans need to further strengthen regional economic integration and deepen economic cooperation with EU members.

According to Đeljošaj, the construction of a common regional market based on EU rules has the potential to transform the economies of the countries of the region.

The Ministry of Economic Development said that at the Conference it was emphasized that increased competitiveness through integration into value chains and a larger regional market will be a springboard for companies from the Western Balkans, in order to better integrate into European value chains and strengthen their competitiveness on the European market.

As one of the most successful initiatives within the Berlin process, the so-called green corridors are highlighted, which are fully recognized as a means of facilitating transport and trade in the region and between the region and the EU.

Đeljošaj said that receiving the IBAR is a direct signal that Montenegro has made significant steps in important areas and that it is actively continuing the process of harmonization with EU laws and standards in order to prepare for membership by 2028.

He emphasized the importance of temporarily closing the negotiation chapters that are closest to closing by the end of the year, namely 7 – Intellectual Property Law, 10 – Information Society and Media, 20 – Entrepreneurship and Industrial Policy and 31 – Foreign, Security and Defense Policy

This year’s conference has a special significance because the Berlin Process marks its tenth anniversary.

Launched in 2014, this process represents an important support for the countries of the Western Balkans on their way to the EU, promoting stability, economic development and regional cooperation.

The conference of economy ministers, which is an integral part of the Berlin process, provided an opportunity to analyze the achievements so far and define further steps towards EU integration.

The main topics were devoted to strengthening the regional market, attracting foreign investments, improving the business climate, and the challenges of energy policy and the introduction of the mechanism for cross-border adjustment of carbon emissions (CBAM).
