Western Digital has expanded its WD_Black SN850X series of NVMe solid-state drives with an 8TB model. This PCIe 4.0 SSD series previously featured 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB models.
The new product is based on a proprietary Western Digital controller, as well as 112-layer BiCS5 TLC flash memory chips. The manufacturer claims a sequential read speed of 7200 MB/s and a sequential write speed of 6600 MB/s for the WD_Black SN850X drive with a capacity of 8 TB. The random read and write performance of the new product is 1.2 million IOPS. The SSD uses DRAM DDR4 cache memory, the manufacturer does not specify the volume.
The WD_Black SN850X with a capacity of 8 TB has a declared resource of 4800 TBW (terabytes of rewritten information). The manufacturer provides a five-year warranty for the SSD, as well as for all drives of the specified series.
The WD_Black SN850X solid-state drive will be available in two versions: without a heatsink, which is priced at , and with a heatsink, which costs $899.99. For comparison, the competing Nextorage NE1N8TB model of the same capacity and offering similar features is priced at the same $849.99. The new product from WD is 100 MB/s slower than this SSD in terms of sequential read, but is 100 thousand IOPS more productive in random write operations. The less productive Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus 8TB model with read and write speeds of 7000 and 6000 MB/s, respectively, is currently offered for $1199.99.
