What a beauty – collect the lupins into a wreath that looks like a road embankment

In early summer, the roadsides bloom in places like variegated lupine fields. The fugitive from the gardens has effectively spread to the wastelands.

The easily spreading red lupine is nationally classified as a harmful alien species. Cutting off the blooms before the seeds ripen is a good way to prevent the plant from spreading. However, the showy flowers can be used for summer wreaths.

Lupine wreath

Supplies

  • lupine blossoms
  • channel network
  • from moss
  • bobbin iron wire
  • side cutters
  • scissors

Make a lupine wreath like this

  1. Use a side cutter to cut a trapezoidal piece from the chicken wire.
  2. Shape the chicken wire into a roll and place the moss inside. Damp moss keeps flowers fresh longer.
  3. Roll the roll into a circle for the base of the wreath.
  4. Cut the tops of the lupine flowers about 10 cm long. Remove the flowers from about 1 cm of the stems.
  5. Make a bouquet from the tops of four lupins and place them on the wreath base with the tops facing outwards and the bases towards the center of the wreath. Wrap the iron wire around the bouquet and the wreath base. Place the next bundle next to the previous one and fasten. Fill the wreath base completely in this way.
  6. Cut about 7 cm long tops from the lupins into an inner ring. Fasten them with iron wire as bunches of four lupins on top of the lupins attached above so that the base ends are placed in the same places as the previous ones. This is how to fill the inner ring of the wreath.
