What are my first impressions?

  • Google introduced three flagships of the Pixel 9 series this year
  • The flagship Pixel 9 Pro XL is becoming my new primary phone
  • Compared to the Pixel 7 Pro, it looks absolutely great to me so far

At the beginning of this year, I became a Pixelák. I “threw away” my few-year-old mid-range phone and rushed towards a younger, but above all much more well-worn model Google Pixel 7 Pro. In essence, for me at the time it represented moving from a 2+kk apartment to a two-story family house – moving accounts and all kinds of applications took some time, but the final pleasure was priceless.

Several months passed, during which the Pixels officially arrived in the Czech Republic, until we reached the debut of the Pixel 9 series, which took place unexpectedly early this year. The result was a performance of not two, but three high-end Pixelswhich mixed things up a bit with the names: the Pixel 9 remains, the former Pro has shrunk and the top model with a decent display was additionally nicknamed XL.

I’ve had the Pixel 9 Pro XL for a few days now and we are gradually getting to know each other. Even before I share with you a photo test or a more comprehensive comparison with the Pixel 7 Pro, I would like to give you a report on how the new product from Mountain View looks good at first.

Design and processing

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL visually decided to live apple style. Flat side edges a rounded corners they make it a distant relative of iPhones, which I’m extremely comfortable with. I have never owned an Apple phone (although I was close to buying one), but I would consider their premium appearance to be one of their main attractions.

It also looks more modern to me redesigned camera module. The cameras are now not found in a metal strip, but inside a separate, prominently raised “pill”. It also provides a place for the flash and temperature sensor. I like premium phones to stand out, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL does it perfectly.

As for the buttons, I feel that Google has taken a step back. In the case of the Pixel 7 Pro, in my opinion, it offers a more comfortable response, but mainly a nicer sound. With the Pixel 9 Pro XL, you can easily get rid of this ailment with original case.

Display

The Pixel 9 Pro XL display is supposed to be larger diagonally than the Pixel 7 Pro, but it is feeling smaller. I would venture to say that the reason is the use of a flat panel instead of a curved one, the aforementioned rounding, and also a different aspect ratio. Wider view in any case, it suits me and again I have nothing to complain about. However, it is not difficult to notice the wider frames on the sides, which are perfectly compensated by the narrower chin. Thanks to the higher brightness, the display seems to me better readable in the sun a reliable adaptive brightness function it allows me to practically not manipulate the settings at all. That is, with the exception of using a smartphone in bed in total darkness.

Cameras

I’m still planning to do a more detailed photo test, but I’ve already gathered a few observations in the past few days. First of all, it is about the senses more capable selfie camera and in the second, even better videos from a nightclub, where, apart from many spotlights and a significant light surface behind the DJ, it is completely dark. Footage from the last drum and bass party had one thing nicer colors but also less noise. I was also able to take pictures of people up close without using the portrait mode. And classically, I can’t praise myself quick trigger.

Performance

Although the processor Tensor G4 is no benchmark star, combined with a superbly optimized system it will offer a fantastic user experience. The user interface was fast even on the Pixel 7 Pro, but the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL raises the bar even higher – applications it starts up quickly and hardly hangs at all. Restarts also take significantly less time.

Battery life

So far, the Pixel 9 Pro XL also makes me happy with its durability. A direct comparison with the Pixel 7 Pro, which is no longer new and therefore has a worn battery in a way, would unfortunately be biased, but it’s nice to know that I can go to school with 60% battery and I don’t have to worry about my phone dying in the evening.

System and AI features

The Pixel 9 Pro XL’s user experience remains the pure gem I’m used to. One of the main attractions of the smartphone is the artificial intelligence functions, but many of them will not work for you in the Czech Republic. I don’t have the Pixel Studio and Pixel Screenshots apps available, so pretty much the only gadget I’ve played with so far is the AI generated wallpapers. Of course, you can customize your phone nicely with them, but it’s definitely not something that most of us would have a reason to upgrade for.

Do you have any experience with the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL?
