If you notice a stain under your car, you may have a problem that needs immediate attention from a mechanic. Here’s what leaks under the car indicate and how to fix them.
Fluid leaks under the car can indicate different problems.
Some are very serious, and must be solved on the spot, others can be fixed later.
What do leaks under the car indicate?
The main leaks under the car can come from:
- engine oil;
- antifreeze;
- brake fluid;
- power steering fluid;
- gearbox oil.
Because each of these fluids has a different color and density, drivers must pay attention to certain details.
How do you identify where the fluid leaking under the car is coming from
Engine oil
Most roadway leaks and stains are caused by engine oil. It leaks due to an incorrect sealing of the tappet cover, the oil sump cylinder head, or a gasket failure. High viscosity, dark color and their location near the oil pan are the main indicators of this problem. When you notice a stain like this under the car, you need to check the oil level in the engine. If that’s enough, you can drive to the nearest service center to fix the problem.
Antifreeze
If you find a larger stain under the car, it may be from the coolant. The problem can be caused by a crack, an insufficiently tightened screw or a hose that is not properly sealed. Antifreeze is also distinguished from other fluids by its pink or light green color. Every time you notice a stain like this, check the antifreeze level. You can make a fill and see where it flows.
Brake fluid
If you notice stains behind the car’s wheels, you may be leaking brake fluid. This is a very serious problem that needs to be fixed immediately. Otherwise, the car will only be able to move on the platform. Generally, these problems occur due to failed hoses or brake pump failures.
Power steering fluid
In general, older car models are equipped with a complex hydraulic system specific to power steering. When there is high pressure, collars, plugs or hose ends can fail. This fluid can also drain past the drain pan, power pump, or the two pipes. You can easily identify this fluid because of its cherry color.
Gearbox oil
Gearbox oil is similar to engine oil. The difference is that it forms below where the transmission joins the engine. Failures are generally caused by pressure in the case of an automatic transmission, or mechanical failure in the case of a manual transmission. Such a problem requires the immediate attention of a mechanic.
