One of the most important organs for digestive processes in the body, whose role is also to secrete enzymes that help digest the food eaten, is the pancreas.

Diseases of the pancreas have a negative impact on overall health because the body is unable to absorb the vitamins and minerals it needs from food.

The pancreas not only plays a key role in digestive processes and how the body absorbs food, but it is also affected by the choice of food we put on the table. Some foods protect the pancreas, while others harm the organ and are especially dangerous in pancreatitis.

What is pancreatitis?

Inflammation of the pancreas is called pancreatitis. It can be acute or chronic, with the chronic having a long-term negative effect on health as it cannot be completely cured. In the case of chronic pancreatitis it is important to be informed about which foods help the pancreas to function normally, put them on the table, which foods are prohibited and which foods are considered permissible in pancreatitis.

What foods are considered permissible in pancreatitis?

Severe pancreatitis – acute and chronic, which progresses severely, is a disease in which you are not excited about food at all, because only liquid nutrition and thus with a tube are recommended for patients who fail to absorb nutrients, in which the body is starving, although they are fed. When the acute phase is controlled, and in patients whose pancreatitis is chronic and proceeds in a milder form, diet is essential to control the disease.

To recover after the acute phase of pancreatitis is over, doctors recommend eating starchy foods like rice and pasta, legumes like lentils and beans, low-fat dairy products, and lean meats. The diet during the recovery period after pancreatitis is high in protein and low in fat, because the low-fat menu, consisting of easily digestible foods, relieves the pancreas and allows it to work less.

Other foods allowed for pancreatitis patients include:

  • fruits fresh;
  • fresh vegetables;
  • steamed or baked fruits and vegetables that are not part of dishes that require frying or heavy sauces
  • foods prepared in a way that does not stress the pancreas;
  • foods that are easy to digest;
  • home cooked food;
  • high-calorie foods, if you lose weight despite eating;
  • other foods recommended by your doctor, depending on your condition and other comorbidities you suffer from;
  • foods rich in vitamins and minerals to help the body with malnutrition caused by not absorbing nutrients from food in pancreatitis.

In the case of pancreatitis, it is also recommended to eat smaller amounts and more often.
