What happens if you wash the car engine? How to properly clean the engine compartment

Probably all drivers want a clean car that shines both outside and inside. And some like to have the engine compartment area flawless as well. But here’s what happens if you wash your car engine with foam and water.

Most people who go to the car wash want an interior-exterior cleaning of the vehicle. For self-wash, it costs about 5 lei for a 4-minute program. Then, starting the vacuum cleaner for another 4.5 minutes, another 5 lei.

At classic laundromats, the cost varies between 30 and 50 lei.

However, some drivers want a total cleaning, including the engine area.

What happens if you wash the car engine?

The engine area includes many electrical components and parts that water should not reach. The car battery and on-board computer, for example, in some models are located right next to the engine.

Also, numerous electrical circuits are exposed at the top of the engine compartment. When the active foam comes into contact with them, it can generate an extremely harmful chemical reaction to the electrical components.

And when water is sprayed over the engine, it will invariably end up over the electrical circuits. Which can even lead to the production of a short circuit.

Furthermore, if cold water touches hot engine components, such as the primary exhaust drum, there is a risk that they will be irreparably deformed.

So, if you wash the car engine with water and foam, you risk causing significant damage to the vehicle.

How to properly clean a car engine

Those who want to have a clean engine, it is advisable to call on the services of specialists. There are many detailing shops that can perform a thorough cleaning of the engine with special products that will not affect the electrical components.

In general, the price of this service is around 350 lei.

An alternative is to use a special spray to clean the engine and areas affected by various oil, antifreeze or freon leaks.

However, great care is required, because all chemical solutions have a corrosive effect on metal components. Therefore, it would be advisable not to apply the solution directly to the dirty area. Rather, impregnate a cloth with this cleaning solution and then use it to wipe away stubborn dirt.

It will take more time, but this way the mechanical and electrical components in the engine compartment area will be protected.

And in the places where the dust has collected and it is difficult to reach with the cloth, an air gun can be used.
