In his statement to journalists, Zurabishvili evaluated the latest developments in the Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions, which declared unilateral independence from his country and are supported by Russia.
President Zurabishvili stated that these two regions are under the occupation of Russia and noted that Russia called on the Georgian government a few days ago to recognize the occupation lines of these regions as a border.
Describing Russia’s call as an “accelerated” annexation attempt against his country’s regions, Zurabishvili stated that he condemned Moscow’s offer.
Zurabishvili also evaluated the raid of the so-called parliament building in Sokhumi, Abkhazia, by the so-called opposition and its supporters.
“CIVIL SOCIETY OPPOSED THIS”
Noting that the participants of the protest opposed the approval of the draft law envisaging an “investment agreement” between Russia and the Abkhazia region, Zurabishvili said:
“What is happening in occupied Abkhazia is also an attempt to approve ‘Russian law’, but civil society opposed it. I want to express my solidarity with them (demonstrators).”
Zurabishvili argued that the Georgian government was pursuing an ineffective policy against Russia.
DEVELOPMENTS IN THE ABKHAZIA REGION
According to some Telegram channels in the Abkhazia region and local media outlets operating there, the so-called opposition and their supporters, who gathered today in front of the so-called parliament building in the city of Sokhumi, opposed the discussion of the draft law on the approval of an “investment agreement” between Russia and the region.
Demonstrators who opposed the approval of the draft law, which included articles on the implementation of investment projects in the territory of Abkhazia by Russian legal entities, took control of the building despite the intervention of the security forces.
In the images shared on Telegram accounts, it was recorded that hundreds of demonstrators also captured the so-called President’s Office after entering the building.
In the so-called parliament, the approval process of the draft “investment agreement” between Russia and the Abkhazia region was postponed.
It was claimed that the so-called President of Abkhazia, Aslan Bjania, decided to withdraw the draft law from the so-called parliament in order to “stabilize the situation in the region”.
Demonstrators are also demanding that Bjania resign from his post.
On the other hand, it was reported that 13 people were injured in the incidents.
– Abkhazia and South Ossetia problem
There was a war between the Georgian army and Abkhazian separatists supported by Russia for 13 months in 1992-1993.
Conflicts known as the South Ossetia War broke out between Russia and Georgia in 2008, and after the war, the Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions, supported by Russia, declared their unilateral independence from Georgia.
Russia recognized the so-called independence of these two regions in 2008, and Georgia, in response, cut off diplomatic relations with Russia.
After the severance of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Switzerland assumed a mediating role between the parties.
