And yet, certain orgasms can actually lead to what we call a “little death.” Rest assured, this is not that serious and in no way means that you will succumb after too much intense sex.
It is more of a state of mind that can accompany orgasmic sex. Orgasm, considered by many to be a true stress reliever, can actually bring a certain sense of fullness and peace that may be deeper for some than for others.
As Gentside reported, the term “little death,” whose origins date back to the 16th century, was first used by the surgeon Ambroise Pare to denote this moment of hesitation when one feels almost passing out after intense enjoyment.
The “little death” happens just before the calming phase, when the spasms caused by orgasm almost give the impression that you are dying and losing control of your body. Fortunately, it is only an impression, which can make us panic. But the little death is actually caused by a sudden drop in excitement, the effects of relaxation and satisfaction after exertion, a bit like after a sports session.
However, even if it’s pretty bleak, it’s not impossible to lose a life during a game of mid-air footwork. This is called epectasis: when our heart beats so fast during intercourse it causes cardiac arrest. That’s how French President Felix Faure died, after a heart attack in the arms of a fan, on February 16, 1899.
