What is the “allowed” margin of error in Portugal?

In Portugal there are many radars installed, including mobile ones that are used by authorities. The objective is to reinforce road safety and there are results that confirm the effectiveness of the equipment. Did you know that speed cameras give drivers “tolerance”?

In Portugal, speed cameras have a margin of error of 5% or 7%

In Portugal, speed cameras have a margin of error, that is, the driver is not fined if they slightly exceed the maximum speed allowed in a given location. Unlike other countries, in Portugal the margin is in percentage.

In our country, you can only be fined if you exceed the speed limits by more than 5%that is if we are talking about fixed radars. I don't case two mobile radarsthe margin of error is 7%.

Following the exampleif you are driving a passenger car without a trailer within a location where the speed limit is 50 km/h, the mobile radar will only trigger if it exceeds 53 km/h. If you are driving the same car on a highway, where the maximum speed is 120 km/h, only after 128 km/h can you be fined if you are "caught" by a mobile radar. On the other hand, if you are traveling, for example, on a road where the limit is 100km/h, a fixed radar will only register if you exceed 105km/h.

The tolerance of radars is not exactly a benefit for drivers. It serves, above all, as a way to avoid challenging them regarding the penalties that may be attributed to them.
