Recalculation of pensions

Starting from September 1, 2024, pensioners will start receiving recalculated pensions, according to the new pension law. The purpose of this recalculation is to adjust pensions according to the contribution period and the points obtained throughout the working life.

Significant increases for long tenures: Daniel Baciu, the head of the CNPP, said that pensioners with more than 40 years of service will benefit from the biggest increases. This is a major development, given that pensioners who have contributed for a long time will see significant increases in their pension, particularly if they have contributed on a minimum wage basis. Increases can even be 100% for them, thanks to stability points, a bonus introduced by the new pension law.

Stability points: These points are intended to encourage continued activity and ensure a sustainable pension system. Stability points are awarded for each additional year of work and are calculated as follows:

  • 0.50 points/year for 26–30 years of work,
  • 0.75 points/year for 31–35 years of work,
  • 1 point/year for 36–40 years of work and more.

Pension calculation: The pension is calculated according to the formula: VPR x Total number of points, where VPR (reference point value) is 81 lei. The total number of points includes contribution points, stability points and points for assimilated and non-contributory periods (eg years spent in the military, unemployment or education).

In conclusion, starting this fall, retirees will see a significant adjustment in their pensions, especially those with longer contributions, benefiting from such substantial increases in accordance with the new regulations.
