The state of electric vehicle batteries directly affects the autonomy, but also the value of the vehicle when you decide to offer it on the used market. Degradation is a process that follows all batteries, regardless of the device they are powered by.
A company specialized in networked transport solutions, Geotab, analyzed the batteries of almost 5000 electric vehicles of individuals and vehicle fleets to find out the degree of degradation. Comparisons with the previous generation of electric vehicles immediately arose.
The main result of the study is that current batteries degrade at an average of 1.8% per year, which is even 22% less than in 2019. With this data, most batteries will last 20 years or more, i.e. more than the lifetime of the vehicle itself. The capacity will be more than 80% after 12 years, which exceeds the normal lifetime of a fleet vehicle, he says HAK magazine.
This study also found that vehicles driven in countries with high temperatures show a faster degradation of battery status. Also, intensive use of the vehicle does not result in dramatically higher battery degradation.
Basically, the new generation of batteries is more durable and, according to this research, will outlast the rest of the vehicle’s components…
