what is the entry level worth?

What does the entry-level SUV version of the Japanese city car pampered by the French, the Toyota Yaris Cross, have in store for us?

Toyota is undeniably a brand that has wings in the collective thinking of French motorists. “Reliable”, “hybrid” and “sobriety” are often among the first words that come to mind when we talk about the Japanese brand. Today, we are interested in the entry-level of its city SUV, the Toyota Yaris Cross. From from €28,800 to the configurator, we will see what it offers us at that price.

Toyota Yaris Cross: a Dynamic finish that goes to the essentials

To take advantage of the Toyota Yaris Cross at €28,800, you will have to turn towards the Dynamic finish. At the time of writing, the manufacturer is offering a discount of €2,500, bringing its entry-level model to €26,300. Concerning the exterior appearance, the standard color is non-metallic white. To benefit from another color, you will have to add an additional €650 to the bill for a metallic paint (two grays, a bronze, a black and a blue) or €850 for a pearlescent paint (one white and one red). On this dynamic finish, no two-tone for the Yaris Cross. As for the wheels, they are adorned with 16-inch hubcaps.

Inside, you won’t have a choice. We will have to make do with black fabric upholstery and the gray headliner. No sports type seats either, nor heated seats. The central touch screen is 9 inches, compared to 10.5 inches on the highest finishes. The digital counter is also smaller on our Dynamic version (7 inches versus 12.3 inches). The air conditioning is automatic, but not dual-zone either.

In short, you will lose a little in ergonomics and comfort without losing the essentials of what we expect from the technology and comfort of a new car in this day and age. Small downside though on the folding rear seat here in 60/40, compared to 40/20/40 on the high-end finish.

A 116 hp hybrid engine that is economical but has difficulty leaving the city

In Dynamic finish, the only engine available is the 1.5L hybrid of 116 hptwo-wheel drive. It is a 92 hp thermal engine combined with an 80 hp electric motor, whose maximum combined power is therefore 116 hp.

In town, the raised driving position greatly improves visibility. But that’s not all! With its light steering and smooth controlsdriving in traffic, even heavy traffic, remains pleasant. At low speed, the Toyota Taris Cross can also drive in “zero emissions” mode and in silence. Which is not really the case on roads and highways. During acceleration phases, when overtaking for example, the engine grinds a lot and makes noise.

On the other hand, the model is still appreciated on these axes thanks to an agile chassis and efficient braking. Finally, this engine is faithful to the manufacturer’s reputation for sobriety already mentioned, since the SUV will consume 4.7 L per 100 km in the city and 5.7 L on the highway according to measurements from our laboratory.
